Creating impact with your music video

Crafting a Compelling Music Video: A Guide to Creating Impact

Many music videos are visually stunning and feature great music, but they sometimes lack a strong impact with the viewer.

To truly make a video stand out, focus on the story you want to tell or the impact you are trying to have. A captivating story can elevate a project from just a collection of great clips and sounds to a truly memorable experience for the viewer.

Questions to Guide Your Creative Process

As you develop your music video, here are a few questions to ask yourself. These can help spark your imagination and ensure your video will leave a lasting impression.

  • Does the video enhance and strengthen the impact of the music?
  • Does the music convey a story or a series of feelings with impact?
  • Does the visual style evolve or tell a story from beginning to end?
  • Are there memorable high points or moments of resolution in your video?
  • Would a viewer get the same impression watching the beginning, middle, and end, or do both the music and video change and develop over time?

It's all about the music

Let the Music Be the Guide

A successful music video isn't just about showing off visuals; it's about connecting with the viewer on an emotional level. The music should be the foundation of this connection.

Think of the song as the script. Does it have a clear structure? A strong introduction, a main theme, and a satisfying conclusion can help build a story arc. Does the music have a narrative? It doesn't have to be a fairy tale, but a song that features conflicts and resolutions, contrasting themes, or a high point with a resolution can provide a rich framework for the video.

For example, a song about a romantic theme—such as betrayal, new love, or self-doubt—can immediately give an audience something to identify with. However, you don't need to limit yourself to romance. The story can be inspired by everyday thoughts and feelings, like boredom at work, a fascination with nature, or a personal comment on a social issue.

Choices in Musical Styles

The art of the music video embraces incredible diversity of music and visual art. Choose a musical style which appeals to you personally, a style that you resonate with. All kinds of music can be used to create a successful music video, including but not limited to:

  • Pop, Pop-Rock, Dance-Pop
  • Reggae, Ska, Dub
  • Classical, Baroque, Orchestral, Show Tunes, Opera
  • Rock, Punk, Grunge, Heavy Metal, Indie Rock
  • Hip-Hop, Rap, Trap, R&B, Soul, Funk
  • Country, Folk, Americana, Bluegrass
  • Religious, Gospel, Choir/Chorus
  • K-pop, J-pop, C-pop
  • Jazz, Blues
  • Experimental, Ambient, Avant-garde
  • Electronic Dance Music (EDM), House, Techno, Trance
  • Latin Music: Meringue, Samba, Tango, Salsa, Reggaeton
  • World Music: Indian, African, Arabic, Celtic, Flamenco

VIDEO that works together with the music

Aim for Music Videos That Move You

The most impactful music videos are those that move you, that linger and echo in your mind long after they're over. This emotional resonance is often created when the video and music work together to tell a cohesive and compelling story.

While it’s tempting to use the infinite power of AI to create mind-bending imagery, remember that everyone has access to these tools. What will make a video unique is the creator's own voice and vision. Ask yourself: What do you want people to feel or think? How do you want the viewer to interpret your music video? Your unique perspective is what will make your video stand out.

The video should support and enhance the music, not overpower it. It is recommended that your video visuals be closely related to the music and its themes. The video's story should feel like a natural extension of the music's message.

A cohesive visual experience is highly recommended. The video segments should be in a consistent style that either remains the same throughout or develops naturally from one scene to the next. Even if you use contrasting styles, they should have a clear relationship with each other and, most importantly, with the music.

Choices in Visual Styles

Choose a visual style which appeals to you personally, a style that you resonate with.  Change it up and evolve it throughout the video.

  • Anime, Manga, Cartoon
  • Goth, Film Noir, Black and White
  • Impressionist, Cubist, Primitive, Art-deco, Neo-modern
  • Photo realism, Documentary style
  • 60s or 70s aesthetics, Vintage, Retro
  • Stop-motion, Hand-drawn animation, 3D rendering
  • Surrealist, Psychedelic, Abstract
